Girdwood is a dog loving ski town and it was important to me that Mountain Mutt Dog Cookies are savory but use no animal products or crude proteins, no preservatives or other weird additives. My brother has a severe peanut allergy so I purposely avoided using peanut butter in my recipes as well.
Surrounded by mountains, a natural rain forest, glacier water, and an abundance of fresh air, Mountain Mutt treats are nature inspired goodness and definitely Girdwood dog approved!

Founded on the core values of allergy awareness, community, and excellent customer service, the business set out with a clear mission to create clean, plant-based, and allergy-conscious dog treats. The journey started in a small, home-based Girdwood kitchen, where recipes were researched and batches were perfected through love and passion, and positive feedback from local neighbors and their girdwood dogs.
The first fresh batches made their official debute at the local farmer’s market, quickly establishing the brand within the community. Today, Mountain Mutt continues to grow in Girdwood Alaska which it calls home. Every single bag sold keeps that original community-first heart alive by actively supporting vital local people and needs through contributions to the Girdwood Food Pantry and Friends of Pets.

On Sunday, September 27th, 2026, I hiked up my favorite mountain to clear my head and find inspiration in the peaks I am lucky enough to see every single morning. Along the way, I captured some fresh photos and found myself pondering two questions: what makes my dog treats so addictive and popular, and do people experience nostalgia through their pets or through "third places" like the Girdwood Sunday Market? By the end of the adventure, I came to a heartwarming conclusion. It is a beautiful combination of both the deep heart and care that goes into handcrafting every batch of Mountain Mutt Dog Treats, and the fact that owners are deeply nostalgic for their pets and want to actively create shared memories that will last a lifetime.

Girdwood Sunday Market: 2026 Season Finale!
Last Sunday, August 30th, 2026, marked the official finale of our Girdwood Sunday Market season! Even though Alaska's unpredictable weather and local summer festivals squeezed us out for two Sundays, this June to August journey proved just how special our community market is. It was a beautiful, nostalgic escape that brought locals and tourists out of their busy lives to connect right here in Girdwood. Instead of waiting for one specific regular customer, I looked forward to seeing everyone who stopped by the Mountain Mutt Dog Cookie Booth including the vendors.
I am so grateful for our fellow vendors who shared the square with their incredible art and baked goods, and for the endlessly friendly travelers and locals who popped in to buy a treat or just say hello. Meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones made every single weekend unforgettable.
The weather completely controlled the market's vibe this summer. Sunny days brought a peaceful but happily bustling crowd down to the square, while rainy days left the venue quiet as vendors and shoppers decided whether to bravely tough out the downpours. Dealing with the rain was easily the toughest part of the season, but getting to swap stories and chat with everyone from all over was absolutely the best part.
This summer taught me a valuable business lesson about balancing what customers want versus what they need like realizing that carrying portable water bowls for unprepared pup parents was just as important as stocking our signature baked treats! Packing up the tent for the last time brought a wave of pure gratitude. While I wish the market season never had to end, we are officially turning the page and gearing up for the Girdwood Fall Festival and the dachshund parade!
Paws on the Trail: Sunny Skies, Dog Jogs, and Community Spirit
On Saturday, July 25th, 2026, I packed up the Mountain Mutt booth and headed to the Friends of Pets annual Dog Jog outside in the Service High School parking lot. The weather completely cooperated, giving us a gorgeously sunny Alaska day that brought out an incredible crowd of passionate pet owners and local vendors. I loved seeing the massive variety of trail ready dogs from Labradors, Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs to Chihuahuas, Saint Bernards, Poodles, and fantastic mixed breed mutts. I was especially impressed by the dedication of the dogs and handlers who tackled the Dog Jog and the outdoor obstacle course. As people stopped by my booth to buy bags of my allergy conscious dog treats or pick up my popular stickers, quite a few people looked at my sign and asked why a dog cookie business supports both the Girdwood Food Pantry and Friends of Pets?
To answer that question, I always explain that I am not just a business owner; I am a member of the Girdwood community who loves to volunteer and give back. While I care for the health and well being of our four legged trail partners, I care just as much about the people who live here. Volunteering at the food pantry is important to me because a strong community means taking care of neighbors in need. Supporting the Dog Jog this year just like I did back in 2025 was an absolute joy, and I want to thank everyone who stopped by to buy from me or share a positive conversation. The weekend fun didn’t end there, either; the very next day, Sunday, July 26th, I set up under beautiful sunny skies for the Girdwood Sunday Market, and I deeply appreciate everyone who stopped by my booth in the town square to support my small business!
